Things to do

Shopping

Howth is located beside the DART station, making it very convenient to access. There are excellent places to shop here including Howth Market, located is outside the DART station. Here you’ll find Irish crafts, amazing handmade jewellery, antique pieces, handbags and accessories. There are also a wide selection of organic foods, like olives, cheeses, nuts and my favourite – delicious chocolate and cupcakes. I can’t control myself there!

See the sights

It’s about 15 minutes walk from the market, you will find Howth Harbour Lighthouse, as well as Howth Castle and its surrounding gardens. If you are interested in Irish history, check out the small plaque at the light house to find out more about this sites involvement in the Irish struggle for independence. It was built in 1817, used for defensive purposes as the strong circular wall defends a gun position.

If you are interested in walking, try the trail from the harbour to Howth Head. Nature lovers will delight here and the cliffs are home to many birds and you might even spot a grey seal if you are lucky!

Where to eat

It’s the big question for me and other food lovers, where to eat ? There are so many great places to choose from in Howth, especially when it comes to seafood. Try The Brass Monkey for seafood tapas and wine or the Oar House another spot specialising in seafood. One of my favourites is The Dog House, it offers fantastic food and has a great outdoor area. It is a unique place and the staff make you feel very welcome. The food was there is superb, particularly the pizza.

Getting there

Get the DART from the city-centre (Tara Street station) to Howth station, or take the 31a bus from Talbot Street ( just a five minute walk from the Spire). Alternatively if you are coming from South Dublin, consider Dublin Bay Cruises which departs from Dun Laoghaire and brings you on a watery journey of Dublin’s stunning bay.
