Welcome to Ireland! You’re part of a whole wave of fresh faces that have just arrived on our shores ready to take on the world and study abroad! It can be a little daunting we know so here’s five things you should do to help with the transition…

So, the months of waiting and wondering are over and you’re finally here. You’ve landed in a brand new land, you’re surrounded by brand new people and you are about to embark on a brand new world! This is set to be one of the most exciting times of your life so even if you’re nervous (it’s natural to be!) breathe deep and enjoy every moment. Here’s five tips to get you started and help you settle in…

Lighthouse icon 1. Make contact

Your international office is there to help you every step of the way so if you haven’t been in touch, get over there! They can provide you with practical advice on what’s happening when and where – from fresher’s week and society open days to class timetable and tutorials. Make them your first port of call on arrival.

06 2. Get out and explore

Discover your new home – whether you’re in a big city or a smaller town. One of the very best things about travelling is uncovering your own hidden gems – from the best coffee spots and budget friendly lunches to the prettiest parks and most stylist vintage shops.

823. Go to lectures

It may seem like an obvious one but attending all your classes is paramount! Doing this makes sure you don’t fall behind later in the year adding to exam and assignment pressures. Managing your time well from the outset really helps cement a routine that works for you – making everything that little bit easier when it comes to crunch time.

224. Embrace all the feels… and then get over it

If you’re desperately homesick and miss everything and everyone, that’s normal. It’s you haven’t thought of home once and still haven’t notified anyone you’ve arrived in Ireland safely, that’s also normal. But do call home, seriously. They are worried about you now. Honestly though, most students will experience a little pining for home every once in a while and it can be hard. You’re a long way from everything you’ve known and out of your comfort zone. Get some solace from the fact that you’re not the only one, take a big gulp, have a little cry, wash your face so no one knows and then go outside and start talking to people and making friends! Time will fly so make the most of it.

0125. Subscribe to a blog

Not just any old blog… this one dummy! We’ll soon have a shiny new batch of Ambassadors from colleges all around the country and they will be sharing their study abroad experiences, answering your questions and giving you first-hand honest advice about studying in Ireland.
