Concerned about smashing your goals for 2019? Our ambassador from India and student of Information Systems Management at NUIG, Pallavi Soni, thinks it’s time to take a step back and make self care a priority.

As spring approaches there is a renewed sense of hope in the air. Brighter days and warmer weather are on the way now that the winter chill is behind us. With that hope in mind, I can’t help but reflect on how I felt when making my new year’s resolutions. Let’s face it, we make these resolutions with the best of intentions but most of the time they never go as planned. Goals keep us motivated, but when we become stressed out trying to achieve them we can face burn out.

As students, we are already putting a lot of pressure on ourselves. We are constantly worrying about our next assignment or trying to catch up on notes — it’s easy to forget to take a breather. When we look at our resolutions we should be thinking about our accomplishments instead of our lack of achievements. Life is all about learning from our mistakes and turning those moments into motivation to achieve our goals.

As the famous quote goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Have a goal in mind and continually work towards it. Hard work takes time. Do your best to remember how far you’ve come when you feel your motivation slide.

Remember that taking time for self care is just as important as scheduling time to study. Why not arrange to meet some friends or go for a walk around campus? You could grab a bite to eat or finish that book you have been meaning to pick up for ages. Listen to some new music or sign up for an art class and get creative. There are so many different ways to relax and try new things without piling on the pressure. Put yourself first, take the well earned break and you will see that you are capable of tackling everything to achieve your goals. Good luck!
