Soumyajyoti Maji, our Indian Ambassador, is undertaking his Master’s in Electronic & Computer Engineering at UCD and in this blog he tells us more about the course, the renowned professors and college life…
Studying abroad was an important decision to make as I had to step out of my comfort zone and leave all the known faces back at home. This decision was more than just studying abroad, it was a choice to immerse myself in local culture, meet new people and experience usual food and something that I won’t regret ever.
I have always wanted to come to Ireland to study because the landscape and the nature are very beautiful here and I decided to pursue a one-year MEngSc in Electronic and Computer Engineering at UCD because of the global reputation of the university. UCD is a research intensive university with most diverse range of graduate opportunities and is ranked in the top 1% of the word’s universities, and is now home for 6000 international students from 127 different countries. International students can avail the state of the art sports and campus facilities including Olympic size swimming pool, debating chamber, dance studio and 3D cinema.
I chose this program due to its flexibility in designing my own coursework from different available modules. This course covers topics from electronic engineering, computer science and business. The professors are fun, easy going and renowned in their field of expertise. The professors are the most important assets of UCD. Some of them have their own ways of teaching students. For example, Prof. Robert Staszewski is more of a practical oriented person. Having over 120 US patents under his belt, he is a dynamic researcher in his field of expertise. He shows us the slides and motivates us to compare the theoretical concepts with the practical results that we work out in our lab. He always enlightens us with the rigorous problems that the industries are facing today and challenges us to work on them. Prof. Brian uses visual demonstrations – utilising slides to ensure that every concept is clear from the very beginning.
Be it the projects or the assignments, we always deal with some of the practical problems that the industry is facing now. One of the interesting subjects that I have chosen is the Entrepreneurship in Engineering. It is one of those unique courses which allow us to become global leaders of tomorrow. Through this course the message is very clear from the university that they want us to create a job than simply getting a one. Our class is always stimulated to think outside the box to make significant contribution to the society that we are in. In this way, this 160 year old university, built with a vibrant campus life and an extensive range of programmes, provides me with a platform to make my mark on the world.
Thanks for the useful information.
You are welcome anytime!
What is the job prospect for masters in project management. Do share the correct idea whether one can have some wealthy stuff after this course in ireland.
I am not from your background and so I cann’t comment much on it. Ireland is a great country with diverse range of graduate opportunities. You need to have the required skillset to bag a job here! You need to work hard to get the grades and at the same time acquire the new skillsets that the companies are looking for. All the best with your study in Ireland!
UCD offers ME and MEngSc in Electronic and Computer. So if I am planning to study which one should I take. Moreover I wanted to know how are graduate opportunities in Ireland.
The two years Master’s in UCD consist of an internship for 8 months. You can have a chance to work with some big time firms like Intel, Google, IBM, Amazon, Xilinx, Analog Device and a lot more. The 1 year course doesn’t have any internship opportunity and the course curriculum for both the programs remains the same.
Hi soumya, i am planning to pursue ME in electronic and Computing from UCD. Would you plz tell me what are the job prospects after passing out from there.
Hello Sourav,
The two year ME will have 8 months of internship. You can try your luck with some big time firms like SAP, Intel, Analog Device and a lot other. I know a couple of students who already have an offer from Intel. You got to work hard here to get a decent grade and acquire all the skillset that the company is looking for. I wish you all the very best with your study in UCD.
Cheers!!
And
1.what about the scholarships and funding, and
2.part time work because the tuition fees is exorbitant high…
3.Do u get V.V giri fully funded scholarship for Masters program.
4. Overall how much it would cost for pursuing this Masters program including all…approximately??
Hi Sourav,
I will answer your questions part by part.
1. There are loads of scholarships for the Indian Students. It can be in form of Govt of Ireland Scholarship which covers full tution fees and gives out 10000 euros as a stipend to some partial scholarships. There are other UCD International Scholarship which be in the form of full tution fee scholarship to some partial tution fee waver. Please go through this link to get more idea about this.
http://www.ucd.ie/international/study-at-ucd-global/coming-to-ireland/scholarships-and-funding/gt-scholarships-and-funding/
2. If you are doing the one year program, I would suggest not to even think of this part time. The course is pretty intense and it is advised that you spent a lot of time hitting the books, notes and your assignment. You should focus more on your grades which are important to get into either PhD’s or top MNC’s. It is not impossible to get a part time here but you need to work a bit on your side as well.
3. Nope I didn’t bag the VV Giri. I received some partial tution fee scholarship (Almost close to the 50% tution fee scholarship)
4. I am not giving out the fee details. Please look up at the website to know more. I presume it would be around 23000 euros (for the 1 year course). You also need atleast 10000 euros for the 1 year to sustain yourself in the heart of this Dublin city!
I hope this helps!
Regards,
Soumyajyoti
