Embarking on the adventure of studying abroad in Ireland has been a rollercoaster of culture shocks for me, an international student from Vietnam. While these shocks initially posed challenges, they have ultimately given me unique experiences that have enriched my life in unimaginable ways.
The Irish Weather: Unpredictably Charming
Dublin welcomed me with its renowned unpredictable weather, a stark contrast to the constant sunshine I was accustomed to in Vietnam. Within the span of a few minutes, the sky could transform from clear and sunny to gloomy and rainy. Initially, the winter days with only 7-8 hours of daylight left me feeling cold and sleepy. However, as time passed, I discovered a silver lining. The Irish temperature, once an unpleasant thing, became just right—neither too cold nor too hot. I found comfort and ease in adapting to the charming unpredictability of Irish weather.
Public Entertainment: Where the Streets Hold Stories
Coming from a culture vibrant with lively street activities and delectable street food, Ireland presented a different scene. Unlike Asian countries where restaurants and shops often operate until late at night, services in Ireland wind down around 8-9pm. The streets are quieter, and people prefer spending evenings with their families and friends. This shift in rhythm fosters close-knit people, meaningful connections, and a gentler, more relaxed pace of life. While I initially missed the hustle and bustle, the tranquil evenings in Ireland grew on me, becoming an integral part of my student life.
Means of Transport: Electric public transports Replace Motorbikes
Navigating the roads of Ireland brought a surprising revelation – motorbikes are a rarity. In Asian countries, motorbikes dominate the streets, contributing to the buzz of city life. However, Ireland embraces a cleaner, pollution-free atmosphere with electric public transportation taking center stage. The rarity of motorbikes is not just a transportation preference but a conscious effort toward sustainability. The transport culture of Ireland significantly contributes to environmental well-being, a commendable trait that resonates with the serene landscapes of this country.
Mental Health Matters: A Culture of Care
One of the most heartwarming aspects of my journey in Ireland has been the emphasis on mental health. There are many counseling centers that are free and easily accessible to all residents. Maynooth University also have a Student Service department which provides counseling services and organizing many well-being workshops. This cultural focus on mental health creates a sense of security for international students like myself. Knowing that there is always someone willing to listen without judgment or discrimination has been a source of comfort, fostering a supportive environment that extends beyond the academic realm.
In conclusion, my journey as an international student in Ireland has been a delightful dance with culture shocks. From weather whims to tranquil evenings, sustainable transport to mental health advocacy, each experience has been a stepping stone towards embracing the beauty of my new life. Here’s to more adventures and discovering the charm of the simple, friendly vibes of Ireland!
