Check out our Student Ambassador Alicia Archunde’s blog to learn more about her experience studying abroad in Ireland and how she navigated unexpected challenges along the way.

The Unexpected

My first thought while I sat waiting for the TSA security at Heathrow airport was, “Is this really how the beginning of my life in Ireland is going to start?” Packing up all my essentials, saying goodbye to everyone I love, and leaving to go to school in a new country was an amazing opportunity and adventure! Yet here I was, sitting on a plastic chair at security. My wallet was missing and I had no credit cards, debit card or driver’s license. The unexpected had happened and was I ready for it?

Planning

When you decide to embark on an education in another country, you have researched, joined forums or groups and have made checklists of what you need to do and what to expect. Before I left I had my room booked at the Carlton Hotel near the airport since I was flying in late, my Airbnb booked, and a meeting with the International Advisor from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology planned. The unexpected that I was planning for was finding an apartment, figuring out public transportation, and working on my student visa paperwork. What I couldn’t plan for was the unknown.

My Second Thought

“I am the only one who decides how I feel about my circumstances.” Now, don’t get me wrong, I was definitely angry at myself for the situation I found myself in and analyzing the millions of ways that I could have prevented this, but none of that helped. And that was what snapped me out of it. How was being angry and critical helping me?

You in Another Country

Like me, you probably sought out this opportunity for amazing reasons! Ireland’s rich culture, their wonderful people and the amazing landscapes. All of these new opportunities to explore and have adventures make traveling away from home easier. With all of this newness and unknown, the common denominator is you! Unexpected delights as well as frustrations are waiting everywhere you go. Who you are and how you adapt are the best tools in your toolbox of life.

Life Toolbox

When you stumble upon a situation or something amazing, what are your reactions? Make sure to take in these moments and let them fill your cup to the brim!

When something frustrating happens, what helps you calm critical thoughts? A missed bus won’t arrive faster by sheer will, so what do you do while you wait?

Who in your life is always excited when you share with them? Reach out to them when the awesomely unexpected happens to double your own joy!

Who’s your cheerleader in your life? Who picks you up during moments of struggle? Never hesitate to reach out to these shining lights. You’re never bothering them.

When in need of immediate help, do you have the ability to reach out to strangers? The people of Ireland are so wonderful! From the person next to you at a restaurant to the person waiting at the bus stop, if you’re lost or unsure there will be someone that will help you if you ask.

Letting Go

In that moment of crisis, I had important positives on my side. I still had my passport, my phone, people back home helping me with my next steps, and euros in my pocket that would see me through the coming week. Once I let go of what couldn’t be changed I was open to what could be achieved. My first week in Ireland brought new friends, experiences, and support. I found an apartment, got my student Leap Card for public transportation and found a new appreciation for bagels. Planning can only be taken so far, but you are more than capable of taking yourself further.

Expect the unexpected, my friends, and your approach in life will become a bit smoother!
