Moving to a new country can be both exciting and daunting, but Ireland’s warm and welcoming culture makes it feel like home in no time. Student Ambassador Benedetta Stefanelli has experienced first-hand how Irish hospitality transforms everyday moments into something special. Keep reading to discover how kindness, community, and a vibrant social life made her student journey in Ireland unforgettable!
Hello everyone! I’m Benedetta, a 21-year-old Italian student currently studying Marketing at Dublin Business School.
I’m here to share my experience of being an international student in Ireland, focusing on the thing that surprised me the most when I first moved here: the warmth of Irish people.
Kindness in Everyday Moments
Since arriving in Ireland, I have noticed something special: people here genuinely care. When I took the bus in Dublin for the first time, I remember being completely amazed by the fact that it’s common practice to thank the bus driver before getting off. Whether it’s the cashier at a supermarket striking up a friendly chat or someone helping me with directions, the kindness of Irish people stands out every day.
A Sense of Community
One of the many advantages of choosing an Irish university is that they excel at fostering a sense of belonging, making you feel comfortable from day one. Here, people truly care that you have a great experience. For instance, orientation events made it easy to meet other students and feel part of something bigger.
Joining student clubs and societies, such as the Dance Society or the Arts and Crafts Society, introduced me to peers from all around the world who share the same interests as me. I feel like I’ve known them forever! University events of all kinds, from Wine & Paint Nights to themed parties, helped me grasp the Irish way of doing things—with enthusiasm and a touch of humour!
The Gathering Culture
One thing I love about the Irish community is that their idea of fun revolves around gathering together while eating and drinking at the pub. Irish pubs aren’t just about Guinness; they are places of connection. I can’t count how many times I’ve made new friends in a pub.
One night in particular, I joined a group of people for a singalong to the amazing live music that is performed almost every night in pubs across the city. By the end of the evening, I felt like I had known those people for years!
Tips for Feeling at Home in Ireland
Here’s how you can make the most of Irish hospitality:
- Say yes – Accept invitations, whether it’s for a walk or a pub night. You never know where it could lead, so it’s important to stay open to opportunities.
- Join in – Don’t be afraid to participate in events, clubs, and festivals to connect with people.
- Start conversations – Don’t be shy about chatting with strangers. Most people are happy to share a story or two!
Conclusion: More Than Just a Place to Study
Ireland is more than an academic destination; it’s a place that has the power to help you grow as a person and discover amazing things—including new things about yourself.
The warmth of Irish people turned what could have been a lonely experience into one filled with wonderful people, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable memories. In Ireland, I found a home away from home, and you can too!
