Hello, I’m Kavizha, a second-year medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Coming all the way from Malaysia, I remember feeling a bit lost during my initial days in this new and different land. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t worry. This blog is here to guide you with all the essentials to enhance your time in this beautiful country!

Get a Student Leap Card:

One small card, big benefits! Getting a Student Leap Card is a game-changer. It not only makes your life a hundred times easier but also saves you some much-needed cash for other expenses. You can easily apply for it through the website, and it will grant you discounts on your school commute and travels around Dublin.

Set Up Your Bank Account ASAP:

Setting up a bank account is crucial as it eliminates the need to carry around a lot of cash, which is safer, especially if you’re living alone. You can also link your bank card to Apple or Google Pay, making grocery shopping and general purchases hassle-free. Personally, I rely on Apple Pay for all my expenses. Setting up a student bank account is straightforward, with most of the process done online via the bank’s website.

Be Ready for the Irish Weather:

Prepare for unpredictable weather, including rain, cold, warmth, and even hailstorms, often in the span of a few hours! Investing in a good raincoat or umbrella is a wise decision, especially with strong winds. The ever-changing weather is a unique aspect of Ireland, and having the right gear is essential.

Travel, Travel, Travel:

Ireland is a land filled with magical views, so seize every opportunity to explore and create wonderful memories. Take day trips to places like Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Cork, or even Northern Ireland. Don’t forget the stunning hikes, each offering a unique experience. And while you’re here, make use of affordable Ryanair flights to explore Europe. The world is yours to discover during your time here!

Explore the Nightlife (Responsibly):

Ireland boasts numerous pubs and bars, offering you a glimpse into Irish culture. Enjoy a pint of Guinness at a local pub or embark on a pub crawl to make the most of your university life. Remember to be responsible and aware of your surroundings and safety.

Well, those are my tips and advice for you. I hope they’ll be helpful on your exciting new journey, and I wish you the best of luck in this brave adventure!

Warm regards, Kavizha, Your Fellow Adventurer
