Living in Dublin as a master’s student comes with its own set of adventures, and discovering the city’s charity shops has been one of the most rewarding ones for me. Not only are they a treasure trove of affordable finds, but they also make you feel good about your purchases. You’re giving back, embracing the circular economy, and taking a stand against the fast-fashion frenzy. Plus, there’s something about unearthing hidden gems that feels like a mini triumph every time.

Here are my top five favourite charity shops in Dublin—each one with its unique charm and purpose.

1. Oxfam Books, Parliament Street

📚 Perfect for: Bookworms, cinephiles, and vinyl enthusiasts.

If you’re anything like me, a stack of books can make any place feel like home. Oxfam Books on Parliament Street is a wonderland for second-hand books, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records. I’ve spent countless rainy afternoons leafing through their shelves, finding everything from vintage classics to obscure films. The prices are as delightful as the finds, and you’ll love knowing that your purchase supports Oxfam’s global efforts to fight poverty.

2. Oxfam Home, Francis Street

🏠 Perfect for: Turning your student digs into a cosy sanctuary.

Whether you’re on the hunt for a quirky vase, vintage dinner plates, or a comfy armchair, Oxfam Home on Francis Street has it all. It’s a treasure trove of homeware, furniture, and the occasional antique-looking trinket. And for fellow book lovers, there’s also a small but lovely book section here. It’s my go-to spot for anything that makes a rental feel like my own space—without breaking the bank.

3. Vincent’s, George’s Street

👗 Perfect for: Affordable fashion with a side of nostalgia.

Vincent’s is the Swiss Army knife of charity shops. Whether you’re looking for stylish clothes, a second-hand winter coat, or vintage boots, you’ll likely find it here. Upstairs, there’s a cosy section for books, CDs, and homeware. One of my best finds was a woollen scarf that made the damp Dublin weather feel a bit more bearable. This shop is run by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, so every euro you spend helps people in need across Ireland.

4. Vision Ireland, Capel Street

👢 Perfect for: High-quality clothes, shoes, and boots.

For those who love a bargain but don’t want to compromise on quality, Vision Ireland on Capel Street is a dream come true. The racks are filled with stylish, durable items that look like they’ve barely been worn. I snagged a pair of boots here that carried me through a semester’s worth of Dublin’s unpredictable weather. Bonus: your purchases support Vision Ireland’s work with children and adults who are visually impaired.

5. Irish Cancer Society Charity Shop

🌟 Perfect for: Trinkets, heartfelt finds, and a meaningful cause.

This small but mighty shop holds a special place in my heart. I stumbled upon it while working on a project related to cancer treatment at the Mater Hospital. It’s a tiny shop, but its shelves hold treasures—trinkets, mugs, and books for as little as €1. I once found a hand-painted bowl that now sits on my desk as a reminder of the power of small, meaningful purchases. Your money here supports cancer research and care in Ireland, so every buy feels extra impactful.

Why These Shops Are Worth a Visit

For a student on a budget, charity shops are a lifesaver. But beyond affordability, these shops contribute to the circular economy, promote sustainable practices, and reduce waste. They’re also a quiet protest against our culture of overconsumption. And, of course, they support important causes—from poverty relief to cancer research and beyond.

So, the next time you’re exploring Dublin, skip the high-street shops and dive into the world of charity stores. You’ll walk away with unique finds, a lighter conscience, and the knowledge that your euros went towards making the world a little brighter.

Happy thrifting!
