Meet Our Student Ambassador, Ye Chun sharing his journey of studying in Ireland, highlighting the country’s world-class education, vibrant culture, and unique opportunities for international students.

Choosing the right destination to study is an essential decision, one that shapes academic pursuits, improves personal growth, and enhances future opportunities. Among the myriad options available to aspiring students, Ireland stands out as a compelling choice. Renowned for its high-quality education, warm hospitality, and a perfect blend of modernity with rich cultural heritage, Ireland has become an increasingly popular destination for international students. In this topic, we will discuss the key reasons I chose to pursue my studies in Ireland.

High-Quality Education

Ireland has one of the best education systems in the world, internationally renowned for its academic quality. It is home to several prestigious universities, known for their high standards, and many institutions are ranked globally. These institutions offer over 5,000 programmes that are internationally recognised and quality assured. Additionally, the Irish educational system is well known for its emphasis on practical learning and for providing ample work placement opportunities. This makes it an ideal choice for students who want to gain high-quality academic qualifications.

English Language

The primary language of instruction is English, making Ireland an ideal destination for international students looking to study in an English-speaking environment. As a Malaysian whose second language is English, this is a significant advantage for us, enabling smoother communication with the people here and providing an opportunity to further improve our language skills.

Innovation and Technology

Ireland is a hub for innovation and technology, with many multinational tech companies establishing their European headquarters here. This creates opportunities for students interested in fields such as technology, engineering, and business. Ireland ranks 23rd among the 132 economies featured in the GII 2022 (Global Innovation Index) and 15th among the 39 economies in Europe. The tech industry in Ireland is thriving, providing excellent opportunities for engineering roles such as mechanical, electrical, sustainability, and environmental engineering.

Friendly and Safe Environment

Ireland is known for its friendly and welcoming population. The country places a strong emphasis on safety, making it a secure place for students to live and study. The locals are very enthusiastic about sharing their stories and culture with the international community. The Irish are known for their warmth, wit, and hospitality, which helps international students feel at home.

Rich Diversity and Cultural Experience

Ireland has a rich cultural heritage and offers a unique blend of modern and traditional aspects. Studying in Ireland provides the chance to experience this vibrant culture, including its music, literature, and festivals. For instance, the Halloween festival originated in Ireland. The Irish are passionate about music, with events such as TradFest, held in Dublin every year, and the Rose of Tralee festival, celebrated every August, paying tribute to a romantic love story from Irish ballads.

Natural Beauty

Ireland boasts stunning landscapes, from lush green countryside to picturesque coastlines. The country’s natural beauty provides a refreshing environment for students. Beyond studying, travelling around the Emerald Isle offers the chance to experience breathtaking landscapes. You can explore Northern Ireland, follow the Wild Atlantic Way down the west coast, or visit the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. City visits from Dublin to Belfast also provide rich cultural and historical experiences.

Quality of Life

Ireland consistently ranks highly in global quality-of-life indices. With its excellent healthcare system, social amenities, and overall well-being, it provides a conducive environment for students. Students can also achieve a “work-life balance” here, as Ireland allows them to work part-time during their studies—up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and 40 hours per week during semester breaks. This allows students to gain valuable work experience whilst supplementing their finances.

Post-Study Work Options

Ireland offers favourable post-study work options for international students. Graduates from Irish institutions can avail themselves of the Third Level Graduate Scheme, allowing them to work in Ireland for a specified period after completing their studies. For example, as a mechanical engineering student, I will be granted a one-year post-study work visa after graduation. International graduates can also extend or upgrade their visas under certain conditions.

Conclusion

Opting to pursue higher education in Ireland is a decision filled with numerous benefits and enriching experiences. The country’s commitment to academic excellence, coupled with a friendly and safe environment, provides students with a platform for both personal and professional growth. The global recognition of Irish degrees opens doors to diverse career opportunities worldwide. The excellent quality of life in Ireland offers an incredible experience that will undoubtedly broaden your horizons and enrich your time studying.
