Wong Chong Yeow, our Student Ambassador from Malaysia studies accounting at Athlone Institute of Technology. In this blog post, Wong highlights the benefits of studying abroad.
Learning a new language.
Studying abroad is a fantastic chance to study through a different language. By immersing yourself in your new city, you’ll pick up new phrases and sayings. Before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to being bilingual!
An independent lifestyle.
Studying abroad will help you become more self-sufficient by pushing you to move outside of your comfort zone. It also helps you to grow on a personal level and become more self-assured. You never know, you may surprise yourself and discover that you can do a lot more on your own than you expected!
A quality education.
Studying abroad can give you better learning opportunities. You can receive the best quality education, broaden your mind, learn new skills and expand your knowledge.
Making friends from around the world.
Most universities have a large community of both local and international students. If you take full advantage of this opportunity, you could graduate having established lasting friendships with people based in many different countries – great for future trips, and also a good base for an international professional network.
Travelling widely.
Studying abroad helps you travel widely. You’ll usually have the time and opportunities to travel both within the country you’re studying in, and across the world. Depending on where you are based, you can visit neighbouring countries during weekends and holidays.
Learning about new cultures and perspectives.
Your introduction to a foreign world helps you expand your outlook. You will gain new experiences and grow cross-cultural understanding through studying abroad. In your next career, you could, for example, cooperate with and understand people from other countries. You’ll feel more familiar with people from diverse cultures, admire their special perspectives, and build closer relationships with them if you study abroad. Our cultural context also has a major influence on how we respond to diverse circumstances. Having a number of diverse perspectives can help you see things in a different light.
